Code First Girls Graduate tells her story

In the lead up to International Women’s Day, Vania Lima, SRE Graduate, shares her story into Tech. An introductory course to Python with Code First Girls was Vania’s first step...

“I would never have transitioned into a Tech career if it wasn’t for CFG offering free education and a company like William Hill actively supporting opportunities for women”.

What prompted you to sign up to the Code First Girls scheme?

"My interest in Tech started several years ago when I was working with software engineers in my growth marketing role. I grew curious about the technical discussions buzzing around the team and wanted to understand some basic concepts to keep up with the conversation. A good friend recommended Code First Girls which led me to an introductory Python course."

How did you develop your skills with Code First Girls?

"I enjoyed the Python course so much that I applied for Introduction to Data and SQL courses. Next, I secured a spot on the Software Development course. I was so happy; I couldn't believe it was finally happening."

How would you sum up the experience on the Code First Girls scheme?

"The journey was more intense than I had anticipated. I couldn’t afford to leave work and retrain, so I studied in the evening alongside my daytime job in marketing. The joy at the end, looking back on all I had accomplished and learnt, was incredible!"

What attracted you to join the Tech team at Evoke?

"I wanted to be part of a recognised and reputable brand. Rather than being nervous, I really enjoyed the assessment day and found myself drawn to the team and the company culture. I was about to board a 12-hour flight when I got the job offer. It was one of the best days of my professional life."

You work in the Site Reliability Engineering team – what’s your experience of your role so far?

"I'm biased, but my team is so supportive. Since my first month, I’ve been able to work on tickets by myself, and this was possible due to the generosity of my colleagues in documenting processes and dedicating a bit of their time to answer my never ending questions."

What are your thoughts about encouraging more women into Technology roles?

"Having a variety of voices at the table is crucial for creating more innovative solutions in Tech. It's all about creating a more honest and welcoming industry for everyone, including women."
