Meet Matt

Meet Matt, a Test Lead in Gibraltar. We went behind the bet and found out a little bit more about Matt and his life at William Hill.

What did you do before your joined William Hill?

I did a degree in Sports Rehabilitation, then moved to Leeds and worked in IT recruitment. I tried to headhunt a test manager from a test consultancy company who had a relationship with William Hill. The tables turned, and the person I was trying to recruit actually ended up recruiting me into a test role and placed me onsite at William Hill!

After 5/6 months William Hill asked me to join permanently, I accepted the role on one condition - that they would give me the chance to work in Gibraltar! Which is where I am now based and have been for almost four years.

Why William Hill?

I've always liked sports and I like the idea of gambling, but I'm not very good at it! I suppose I fell into software testing, but the more I did the more I found it interesting. My interest in the industry as a whole brought me into the company, but the people have kept me here. It's a great place to work, with lots of changes and challenges.

What’s your career journey so far?

I started as a manual Software Test Engineer in Leeds, moving to Gib as an STE2 when I was promoted in 2013. My next Gib based roles was a Senior Tester, and recently I have successfully applied for a Test Lead (Manager) job. So in just over four years I’ve grown a lot in my career,

What’s been your highlight?

I'm an Aston Villa fan, and was lucky enough to be given tickets to the FA Cup final in 2015. Unfortunately we lost 4-0 to Arsenal though! I was given the tickets by William Hill to thank and reward me for a great piece of work.

What advice would you give to thinking of a career in test?

Give it a try. William Hill have got a large retail and business operation as well as technology. We're a varied and well established business with a tech driven focus. Tech underpins everything we do and this will get stronger. It's an interesting pace to be. This isn't a shrinking business / marketplace, we're here for the long run. Whether we're working towards the Cheltenham Festival or World Cup - everything is driven around sport.
